Ж. Саньяк опубликовал результаты первого экспериментального наблюдения влияния вращения на фазовый сдвиг интерференционной картины в оптическом интерферометре. В течение последующих ста лет велись споры о значении и интерпретации этого открытия, и сейчас, век спустя, выясняется, что данные наблюдения универсальны и справедливы для любого типа волн, от оптических (или электромагнитных) до используемых с недавнего времени волн материи.
