The first issue of the bulletin entitled Instrumentation was published in February 1944 and pioneered the publication of special instrumentation literature in the USSR.
The journal title was changed several times: Instrumentation (1944 – 1968), Navigation and Gyroscopy series of the journals Marine Engineering (1969 – 1973), Shipbuilding Problems (1974–1985), Shipbuilding Industry (1986 – 1992).
The journal got its current title Giroskopiya i Navigatsiya (Gyroscopy and Navigation) in 1993.
In 1993–1996 the journal founder was CSRI Elektropribor (currently, State Research Center Concern CSRI Elektropribor, JSC).
Since 1996 the International Public Association Academy of Navigation and Motion Control, uniting about 300 leading scientists, has been a cofounder of the journal.
